These instructions will be set for using "Windows Explorer", as I have found that it is much easier to sort/create/move/delete folder here than in "My Computer".

1. Open "Windows Explorer" (Start/Programs/Windows Explorer) (XP users Start/Programs/Accessories/Windows Explorer)
2. Choose which drive you wish to create your new folder and highlight (left click on) it. {Fig 1-2}
3. In the main menu at the top of the "Windows Explorer" window choose (left click on) "File", {Fig 1-1}

4. From the resulting dropdown menu choose (left click on) "New" {Fig 2-2}, from the resulting dropdown menu choose (left click on) "Folder". {Fig 2-3}

5. You should now see in the "Window Explorer" window under the drive you selected a folder named "New Folder", {Fig 3-1}, it should be highlighted and ready for you to type in the new name.  If it isn't then highlight (left click on) it, then right click on it and choose "Rename" from the popup menu, or press the "F2" key on your keyboard, and type in the name you wish to use for the folder.

Moving

1. Right click on the folder/file (and with out letting go of the mouse button) drag (move) the folder/file to the place where you want it, then release the right mouse button and choose "Move Here" {Fig 4-1}, from the popup menu.  In this same menu you will also find the options to "Create a short cut here", the difference is, that if you move it, it will no longer be in the place it was, if you only create a short cut then the folder will remain where it was and what you will have is a short cut to that original place.  This is if you want several way of getting to a program/folder, but don't want to waste a lot of disk space putting the actual folder/program in each folder/drive you want it in. The "Copy Here" option will make a copy, you will have all the files/programs in both places.

To associate a file with a program, to have *.htm, *.html files open in browser of your choice when double click, to have *.txt, *.log or other files open in NotePad when double clicked, etc.

Find a file you want to associate with a program, say an *.html file.

(1) In Windows Explorer click on and highlight a file {Fig 7-1}

(2) On your keyboard hold down the Shift key and right click the file

(3) from the popup menu choose Open With {Fig 7-2}

(4) choose the program you want to open this type of file {Fig 8-1}, in this case I would choose iexplore

(5) place a check mark in the square Always use this program to open this type file {Fig 8-2}

IF after scrolling through the list you do not find the program you want to associate with the file type you have chosen click Other {Fig 8-5}, this will open an explorer dialog box, that you can use to locate the *.exe file for the program you do want to use.
